What is this?
These are semi-finished juniper reeds for flishorn, in the same standard dimensions that I use on all flishorn I make (see picture for measurements). The reeds are pre-dimensioned, but deliberately not pre-bent or sanded to final thickness. You do the simplest part yourself: soaking in hot (not boiling) water, bending, sanding and fine-tuning to the desired shape and thickness.
Why choose semi-finished reeds?
Cheaper and faster than pre-customised reeds.
Customise yourself thickness and response to your mouthpiece and playing style.
Always in reserve in the backhand - without having to send in your horn.
Suitable for
All flishorn made by me (standard dimensions from 2024).
Other flishorn can also work, but may require additional customisation of shape.
Contents of the pack
5 pcs / 10 pcs juniper reeds (semi-finished), sorted and cut to my standard dimensions.
How to use them (short step-by-step)
Soak the reeds in hot, not boiling water for 20-30 minutes.
Bend slowly over the mouthpiece of your horn.
Fasten and let dry (e.g. linen thread) until it holds its shape.
Sand surface/edges lightly with fine sandpaper.
Fine tune the thickness as needed. Test - small adjustments make a big difference.
Tip: Minor sanding first. Test, then adjust. It's easier to take a little more later than to save a reed that's too thin.
Frequently asked questions (FAQ)
Are they compatible with any flishorn?
Usually, but small differences in mouthpieces may require additional customisation.
How warm water?
Hot, not boiling. Throw the reeds into an electric kettle, switch on and leave for 20-30 minutes.
How long does a reed last?
Depends on use, moisture and storage. Feel free to keep 2-3 playable reeds in rotation.
