The bukkehorn is one of the oldest and most fascinating instruments in the Norwegian folk music tradition. Made from real goat horn, it carries a powerful and distinctive sound. Since every goat is different, each horn has its own unique character – in shape, color, and tone.
Characteristics of the bukkehorn
This bukkehorn is of the trumpet-blown type, with 4+1 finger holes. The fundamental pitch usually lies between E and Ab, but it can vary from horn to horn. The colours range from deep black to almost white, with many natural shades in between – a living material that makes each instrument one of a kind.
If you have special requests, such as a preferred fundamental pitch, you can add it as a comment when ordering. I cannot guarantee it, as the horns are always shaped by the goat’s own nature, but I will do my best to meet your preferences.
From shepherd’s horn to traditional music instrument
Originally, the bukkehorn was used as a signal and warning instrument by shepherds in the mountains. Later, finger holes were added, and it became a musical instrument in its own right. With some basic technique and a little lip training, you can play both beautiful traditional tunes and more modern melodies.
Craftsmanship
Each bukkehorn is handmade in my workshop, with respect for both the material and the tradition. I combine old methods with my own experience, so you receive an instrument that is not only playable, but also a piece of Norwegian cultural heritage.

A few weeks ago I bought a Bukkehorn from the company. From the moment I placed my order, I felt well looked after. Mr. Grønnesby sent me a photo of the finished horn and described its advantages and disadvantages. I decided in favour of the horn and I am delighted. I would order from him again and again.

I commissioned a bukkehorn from Blåsemaker that would best suit my needs as a folk musician, and the result is a true treasure. Crafted from goat horn, it has a sound that is raw and powerful yet warm, carrying the tradition alive in every note. Karstein's attention to detail is remarkable-he works closely with the musician to create something truly special. The craftsmanship is outstanding, with every detail feeling thoughtful and alive. I absolutely love playing it, and I would wholeheartedly recommend having one made.
